I am not certain where the writer lived previously, but I am firmly against private insurance.
I lived in Nova Scotia and the costs were much higher than here in B.C. My mother was with a company for more than 20 years with no claims and when she hit 65, her premium almost quadrupled simply because she turned 65. My son-in-law's car insurance payment was almost double his car payment simply because he was under 25.
I'm quite content with the Insurance Corp. of B.C., thank you. If people want additional coverage over their ICBC coverage, there are private options available.
