There is lots free for kids at the Saanich Fair — horse show, dog agility, draft horses, llama-petting, lead a donkey in the ring. Pigs are fun to watch. Kids’ Zone is a huge draw. In the RCMP building can be found Lego and box-top gardening, all made by kids (all get a ribbon).

They can see rabbits being groomed for the show, baby chicks being hatched. They can milk a make-believe cow and pet a real Jersey cow.

You can teach your kids how to shop for food in the “store” corner. Among the old farm engines you can actually make and take home for free a five-foot piece of rope for skipping or as a lead for your dog. There’s an elastic-band paddlewheel boat race across a large pond, and the first across gets a free juice box.

The list goes on. These are all free and run by volunteers.

You can buy local berries for $8.50, or you can stop by the roadside on the way home and pick blackberries for free.

Have you taken a family of four to the movies lately?
