Protesters are the enlightened ones

Re: “Protesters trying to stop progress,” letter, Jan. 15.

Contrary to what the writer has been told, there were protesters when the railway was built. They were called “Indians,” “savages” and even worse. As the railway was rammed through their territories, they were routinely beaten, starved, infected with disease, abused, raped and murdered. Many of their food sources were ravaged and killed. And, finally they were put on reserves.

Second, the people standing against the fossils are really the enlightened among us; they see the writing on the wall. They are trying their best to stop the following, so hauntingly described by Patrick Lane: “We began to eat the world. We devoured the oceans and we devoured the land. We drank the lakes and the seas and we ate the mountains and plains. We ate and ate until there was almost nothing left for you or for your children to come.”

Wake up, people!
