Lawrie McFarlane’s assertion is correct inasmuch as in order for the monarchy to survive, it has to move with the times.
I would say that Prince Charles is a product of the 20th century, even forgetting his divorce and that of his wife, which ought to disqualify him from the role as it would have in the past. He is very much yesterday’s man.
Bypassing him and having William and Kate succeed to the throne would bring the monarchy into the 21st century. That might not only ensure its survival, but help it to thrive.
