The article focused an important report on the increasing heat content of a large region of the Arctic Ocean, based on a study by Prof. Mary-Louise Timmermans of Yale University. Timmermans, a Canadian citizen, is a graduate of the University of Victoria’s department of physics and astronomy. While there, she took advantage of the excellent co-op program to spend several work terms with the Arctic science group at the Institute of Ocean Sciences. After completing a PhD at the University of Cambridge, she returned to Victoria as a post-doctoral research fellow working with colleagues at IOS and UVic, before being lured to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution and then Yale.

She still collaborates with Canadian scientists, but wouldn’t it be better if we attracted her back to a position in Canada?
