Nature can be part of every child’s learning

Re: “Nature kindergarten spots filled quickly,” Jan. 13.

As a former elementary school teacher and the youngest of 10 children to be home-schooled until the age of nine, it concerns me greatly that parents have to camp out at a school to reserve a place for their child to study nature.

As a teacher, I took my classes outside as much as possible because, fortunately, the school was in a rural area. That does not exclude those who live and work in towns.

To me, everything to do with nature and to do with learning must be present for young people. There must be space. When I was a little boy in the home school in our dining room, I was allowed the freedom to go outside in the beginning years, so when I became a teacher, I wanted my students to have some of that freedom, because that is where learning begins.

How come there are only 20 spaces in the nature kindergarten program at South Park Family School? What makes it so special?
