Mill Bay ferry service should be expanded

Regarding the highway crash that closed the Malahat for several hours on Oct. 27, there is an alternate route — the Brentwood-Mill Bay ferry. It’s time to start pushing for the extra ferries on this route. It is almost always full and does make money.

One problem is that the hours are awkward. The last sailing from Brentwood is 5:55 p.m. and the last from the Mill Bay side is 6:30 p.m. Also, it doesn’t carry many vehicles and you could wait for several ferry crossings. It does not do an extra run if there is an overflow.

Unfortunately, the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure can only see fit to have one ferry on the route. The excuse is no other ferries are available to put on the run. I believe they have an extra ferry sitting in Deas Basin in Vancouver.

We should complain to our MLAs and the Ministry of Transportation about the lack of money spent on Island highways compared to what they spend in Vancouver on their roadways and transportation.

One could also do the Salt Spring Island run that gets you back on the Island north of Duncan. This is more expensive but you might get home.
