May 21: Suggested approach is a clear loser

Gwyn Morgan has some of his facts straight, but he takes comfort in pointing the finger at the other guys as the major contributors to CO2 production and climate change.

In fact, Canada is a rich country and produces more CO2 per capita than most countries. Climate change is a scientific fact and we ignore at our peril that we have only a short time to turn it around before we irreversibly destroy our planetary life-support system.

If Canadians see their relatively small contribution overall as permission to continue feeding the climate fire, they risk being the irresponsible rich kid on the block. Showing the way to aggressively curtail climate-destroying behaviour is the best and most effective action plan.

Being opportunistic and continuing to sell others our fossil fuels might appear to make economic sense in the short term, but only makes matters worse for the planet and is unconscionable for a responsible country such as Canada. Our major political parties are at best struggling to devise a truly effective way forward, but Morgan’s approach is a clear loser.
