Make protesters pay to clean up damage

I am wondering why the cost of repairs to the Nanaimo school must be borne by the school district. The article says the protesters were arrested. So the authorities know who caused the damage.

These people should be prosecuted and pay for the damage. If I went into a school and caused damage, would I not be held accountable? Why do the taxpayers keep having to pay when wilful damage (otherwise known as vandalism) is done by known individuals or groups?

These vandals are hiding in plain sight. I understand people want to live somewhere (the tent city situation), but be respectful. Did their parents never teach them to clean up after themselves?
