Major road changes not likely needed

Re: "Solo drivers clog Victoria roads," Sept. 21.

This article, raising alarm about passenger vehicle use across Greater Victoria, seems influenced by the green movement, whose self-ennobling communitarians regularly pick statistics to support positions that place their "sustainable" ideology above the ability and duty of individuals to discern their own truth.

The vehicle numbers outlined in the capital region household travel survey reflect status quo, which presupposes straight-line projections of population increase and business activity. But we are entering a Greater Depression, with major trend changes in population and consumption.

The market for big-ticket consumer items like cars will suffer as confidence erodes and jobs are lost.

Problem intersections notwithstanding, there will be no justification for major intervention in the regional commute. Today's bus capacity and bike paths will probably be more than sufficient to serve the next generation.

Save tax dollars for areas where they will be needed.
