June 9: Events are way of saying thank you

Re: “City to cover Canada Day policing shortfall,” June 7.

Shame on Victoria City Council for even thinking that city staff should contact the departments of National Defence and Veterans Affairs to discuss recovering the costs of what council termed military events.

Remembrance Day and other similar events are not military events. These are ceremonies in which citizens have the opportunity to pay tribute to both those who lost their lives to protect our freedoms and to our brave veterans.

Our tax money and our presence supporting these ceremonies are little enough acknowledgment and thanks for the sacrifices made by our military personnel. I can only hope and request that council will recognize and apologize for their abysmal lack of both understanding and gratitude and retract their directive to city staff.
