Hartland site raises many concerns

Re: “Hartland neighbours wary of sludge plant,” July 2.

This article covered some of the concerns that districts adjacent to a sludge plant at Hartland have for this location, but a number of points were missed.

Have other communities that would be effected had the opportunity to consider the effects of this location?

The Hartland site will require 36 kilometres of pipeline (18 in and 18 out), four high-pressure pumping stations, plus the installation and operating costs for these installations.

During the construction stage, the pipelines and pumping stations will intercept countless, heavily travelled road systems and will intersect 10 waterways.

Other concerns:

• reduction in property values (who wants to reside adjacent to a sewer line?);

• the possibility of a sewer leak (the current leachate line has failed twice);

• interruptions in local neighborhoods during construction;

• tax implications to cover the cost of construction and operation of the 36 kilometres of line and four pumping stations.

The Capital Regional District should be given the time to review more current methods of sewage treatment and to look at sites more beneficial to all areas.

The current plan is not a good one.
