GM foods need thorough testing

Man's attempts to reorganize nature either for convenience or profit have proven disastrous before, as in this instance.

The French study finding genetically modified Canadian corn and Roundup to have serious effects over the long run has long been suspected by many. The 90-day testing period done by Health Canada is not long enough - these tests should always be done beside one of a longer duration habitually. Leaving this testing to the manufacturer is a ludicrous practice.

The elevated risks of cancer, severe organ failure and premature deaths of laboratory rats leaves me to wonder how many of us have suffered what since our government approved these goods in 2001.

I feel that Health Canada (as well as the food industry) needs an overhaul of its mandate and practices. There can be no other considerations other than placing the welfare of consumers above all else.
