Don't blame cougars without investigation

The recent rash of livestock killed in Central Saanich makes me question if cougars are really responsible. Conservation officers have concluded that these animals were indeed killed by cougars because cougar tracks were found near them.

The recent rash of livestock killed in Central Saanich makes me question if cougars are really responsible.

Conservation officers have concluded that these animals were indeed killed by cougars because cougar tracks were found near them. This doesn't make sense, since cougars only kill for survival and not sport; none of the dead animals found had been consumed, just killed and left there.

Another possibility that has been brought up is that a mother cougar is teaching her young to hunt. Again, this makes no sense in that none of the animals killed had been consumed in any way.

It is simple to just blame the cougars and go out hunting for them, but what if something else is responsible? The dead animals should be examined by some expert who can confirm or refute the claims that cougars are killing them.

Until this is done, we can't be sure of the truth.
