In the popular sci-fi movie The Day the Earth Stood Still (2008), Klaatu the alien (played by Keanu Reeves) argues with Professor Barnhardt (played by John Cleese) about the future of the Earth.
Klaatu: “The problem is you. You lack the will to change.”
Barnhardt: “Well that is where we are. You say we are on the brink of destruction and you are right. But it is only on the brink that people find the will to change. Only at the precipice do we evolve.”
Sounds familiar. It’s time for our politicians of all stripes to stop arguing about trivial things in an attempt to score political points, recognize that we are on the edge of the precipice and get on with what is important. Get to work!
