During the summer, riding home on my bicycle at night along Blanshard Street, I would occasionally encounter the unmistakable smell of marijuana smoke as cars passed me or pulled up beside me at stop lights.
The smell fades away in winter, presumably because windows are rolled up.
But I smelled it again as I was cycling on Tuesday night, a warmish night, with no rain. The weather was nice enough to crack open a window to clear the smoke.
I’m not sure what to make of this. A passenger relaxing perhaps. I’m hoping it wasn’t a driver. Though, I was once told by an aquaintance from university days that there is nothing wrong with smoking a joint while at the wheel. A question was posed: Where are the rigorous scientific studies demonstrating that it’s not a good idea?

But the Canadian Coast Guard website claims 18 icebreakers — two heavy, four medium, and 12 light, including one named after our very own George R. Pearkes, a much-honoured military man and former lieutenant governor of B.C. He is best known around these parts as namesake for the George R. Pearkes Recreation Centre in Saanich.
Maybe the light-duty icebreakers aren’t regarded as real icebreakers in some circles.
