Maybe you’ve experienced this. (OK, maybe not; I’m especially fashion challenged.)
For more years than I can remember, I’ve been buying a certain brand of socks. They were always the same colour, black, to make post-laundry sorting easier. They fit, they were comfortable, they didn’t cost that much but weren’t cheap either. Then, about a year ago, I noticed that new batches of the socks were thinner and not as comfortable. The cuff elastic gave out quickly, causing the socks to sag. Holes appeared alarmingly fast. I was constantly tugging at the socks to pull them up. During a vacation that involved a lot of walking, my feet got sore. That was my impetus to move in another sock direction. Despite lacking proof, I began to suspect the socks were the source of my soreness.
My long-time socks brand had let me down. They changed their formula. But their name and packaging did not change.
I switched to a more expensive brand, one with patterns. (Note to ex-colleague who used to criticize my bland monochrome socks: I’ve gone wild — my socks are now two tone — dark grey and slightly-less-dark grey.)
The new socks feel terrific. They stay up. They are snug without being constricting. They are slightly thicker at the heel and sole. They cost twice as much, but they are worth it.
On long walks, my feet no longer get sore. I’ve read that getting socks just right is a big deal for serious runners and hikers. I’m beginning to understand why.
Your sock drawer might need an overhaul if you’ve had the sock troubles I’ve had.
