Organizers of B.C.’s Wounded Warrior Run have postponed the event to April in hopes provincial health orders will allow non-essential travel by then.

The annual run, a fundraiser for the group — which provides mental-health support for veterans, first responders and their families — was scheduled to begin in Port Hardy on Sunday, but will now start from the same location on April 11.

The event involves a team of eight runners in a relay-style run along the length of Vancouver Island. It takes the runners eight consecutive days to cover more than 700 kilometres.

The group, which hopes to raise $250,000 for its programs, has convinced provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry to join the team for the final leg of the journey through downtown Victoria and speak at the finale if the event goes ahead in April.

“It is disappointing to postpone the run, but we know that the mission doesn’t change. We are still working every day to raise funds for our veterans, first responders and their families to access life-changing programs through Wounded Warriors Canada,” said run director Jacqueline Zweng in a statement. “We know this need is also greater than ever, given the circumstances of the past year since our last run in 2020, which was literally a week before the pandemic shut things down in Canada.”
