About 120,000 Island homes and businesses lost power Saturday morning after work on a major transmission line tripped an widespread outage.

B.C. Hydro spokesman Ted Olynyk said power was quickly restored to all customers within about a half hour.

He said the cause was not related to weather or the wildfire at Mount Hayes near Ladysmith.

Olynyk said B.C. Hydro crews were doing work at its Nile Creek facility in the Cowichan Bay area on the major transmission line that supplies power to Vancouver Island.

“There was an overload,” he said, triggering the equipment to initiate a widespread temporary shutdown at about 10:50 a.m.

B.C. Hydro customers were mainly affected in Greater Victoria area as well as the Cowichan Valley and Port Alberni regions.

“There was no system damage,” Olynyk said. “The power simply kicked back in.”
