A 41-year-old man was nabbed Thursday by Oak Bay police — with the help of Saanich police dog Hitch — after he was spotted driving recklessly.

Deputy Chief Ray Bernoties said the man is alleged to have driven through Saanich and into Oak Bay, before abandoning his vehicle on the grass at Carnarvon Park.

He said an B.C. Ambulance paramedic who saw the man suspected he was impaired and unsuccessfully tried to get him to pull over.

The man fled on foot once he got to the park.

“The Saanich dog came and tracked the person to a residence nearby,” Bernoties said.

It turned out to be the man’s home. He was caught next to a basement window.

The man was released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.

“The potential charges are dangerous driving and mischief, as well as for the damage to the park,” Bernoties said.
