A man is in custody and two Victoria police officers were sent to hospital after an altercation Friday morning in the Jubilee neighbourhood.

The two officers were assaulted while trying to apprehend a man who reportedly had been making threats of violence.

The officers attended a multi-unit building around 8 a.m. to investigate reports of a man with mental health issues.

After speaking with the man, the two officers attempted to apprehend him under the Mental Health Act.

In the ensuing altercation, the officers were assaulted and they used oleoresin capsicum, a pepper spray, and a conductive energy weapon in attempts to subdue the man. According to police, both were ineffective.

The man was eventually subdued by several other officers who responded. The man was taken to hospital for a mental health assessment and to be treated for the pepper spray.

Police are recommending charges of assaulting a police officer.

The incident also led to a woman being taken to hospital Friday morning after her car collided with a Victoria police SUV that was en route to the mental health incident.

Douglas Street in downtown Victoria was closed temporarily Friday morning near Fisgard Street as a result of the crash.

The civilian driver was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The officer driving the SUV also received non-life-threatening injuries.

Both files are currently under investigation and police ask anyone with information to call them at 250-995-7654 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
