Vehicle lands on roof after hitting power pole; bystanders help driver out of wreck

Bystanders rescued the driver of a vehicle that hit a power pole and landed on its roof in Esquimalt on Saturday. Victoria police officers were called to the scene of a serious collision at Viewfield and Devonshire roads just after noon.

Bystanders rescued the driver of a vehicle that hit a power pole and landed on its roof in Esquimalt on Saturday.

Victoria police officers were called to the scene of a serious collision at Viewfield and Devonshire roads just after noon.

Police lauded the “heroism” of bystanders who pulled the driver from the damaged vehicle and doused the vehicle which had caught fire.

“They extracted the driver from the heavily damaged vehicle and another worked to extinguish the vehicle which caught fire,” police said in a statement.

The driver and another bystander went to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

Collision investigators and analysts continue working to find the cause of the crash.

Power was shut off in the immediate area and traffic shut was closed into the afternoon on Devonshire Road and along part of the E&N trail.
