Port Alberni RCMP has nabbed two men allegedly behind a massive Island-wide theft ring that cost victims more than $400,000 in stolen goods and damaged property.

At one point, the investigation involved an RCMP helicopter from Comox and a canine team that tracked several stolen trucks connected to the theft ring.

Over the past two weeks, the criminal group allegedly stole trucks, committed break-ins and vandalism, and was found in possession of stolen property from across the Island, including Victoria, Nanaimo, Port Alberni, Parksville, Qualicum Beach and Campbell River.

“While the tally is climbing as the investigation unfolds, investigators indicate that the total loss and damage resulting from these incidents is currently estimated at over $400,000,” said Port Alberni RCMP spokeswoman Cpl. Jen Allan.

Mounties from several jurisdictions pieced together information. The investigation zeroed in on two Port Alberni men believed to be the ringleaders behind the theft operation. Forensic identification officers worked to gather physical evidence to support criminal charges.

On Wednesday, Port Alberni RCMP arrested 26-year-old Sheldon James Johanson at a residence on Maebelle Road, shortly after he allegedly fled from police on a motorcycle on Wadena Road, where he was spotted just before 5 p.m.

Johanson is charged with one count of flight from police, and Crown prosecutors are reviewing additional charges.

On May 9, Port Alberni RCMP arrested 19-year-old Craig James Donnelly Hannon. Hannon is charged with two counts of theft of a motor vehicle, and three counts of possession of stolen property over $5,000.

Both men have been remanded into custody until court appearances in Port Alberni provincial court on May 20.

Mounties said they expect to make additional arrests as investigators continue to comb through evidence and speak with victims and witnesses.

“This rash of property crimes has been the subject of our intense focus in recent weeks, and it is rewarding to see an integrated effort result in the arrest of two men we believe responsible,” said Insp. Mac Richards of the Port Alberni detachment.

“Our serious crime, general duty and forensic identification teams worked around the clock to get what was needed to put an end to the victimization. It is a good day for all involved.”

RCMP did not give details of the quantity of stolen items recovered, where the items were found or whether they’re working to get the stolen goods back to their rightful owners.
