Saanich police investigate on Saturday, Aug. 17, 2019, after a body was found outside an unoccupied home.

Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit is investigating after Saanich residents discovered a dead body outside an unoccupied home early Saturday morning.

Police were called to the scene at Crease Avenue and Wascana Street shortly before 9 a.m. with a report of a man lying unresponsive. Emergency personnel confirmed that the man was dead.

Police say the death is being treated as suspicious due to the nature of the injuries.

Investigators are working to identify the man and determine his cause of death.

Police are looking for anyone who was in the area between 6 a.m. and 9 a.m. Saturday and would like to view any dash cam footage captured in the area during the time.

Heather Allensen, who lives a few houses away from where the body was found, was one of the first to discover the man around 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Allensen said she walked her dogs past the house about an hour earlier and didn’t notice anything.

Allensen said she didn’t recognize the man from the neighbourhood.

A section of Crease Avenue on either side of the intersection with Wascana Street will remain behind police tape on Monday while police investigate. A portion of the Galloping Goose trail near Crease Avenue and Wascana Street is also taped off. Cyclists and pedestrians using the trail are advised to use Cadillac Avenue from Tillicum Road to Harriet Road.
