Emergency responders used a helicopter to rescue two hikers off a mountain in the Alberni-Clayoquot region Sunday morning.

West Coast Search and Rescue Society received an SOS from an emergency device late Saturday from the hikers on a steep, snow-covered slope at Triple Peak, about 50 kilometres northeast of Ucluelet.

West Coast Search and Rescue opened communication with the hikers, who were able to shelter overnight. A helicopter from Comox Valley Search and Rescue hoisted the hikers to safety early Sunday morning.

Neither had injuries, but the hikers ran into difficulties descending a trail because of snow.

Triple Peak is a 5.6-kilometre “out and back trail” following a waterfall rising 813 metres. It is primarily used for rock climbing and is rated as difficult by AllTrails.

“The two individuals were unable to descend further on a climbing route. They did the right thing in calling for assistance and staying put,” said a spokesperson for West Coast Search and Rescue.

“They had the gear to provide shelter and safety while they waited for assistance. Luckily, the temperatures were high and we hope they enjoyed a beautiful starry night once they knew help was on its way.”

Officials warned climbers and hikers that despite high temperatures there is still a considerable amount of snow in the alpine areas of the Island.

Climbers are reminded to pack the appropriate gear such as ice axes and crampons as well as emergency communications devices.
