Trapped Vancouver Island crash victim takes video of rescue

A Duncan driver who suffered multiple broken bones after crashing his car into a roadside power pole has uploaded video footage of his rescue to the Internet.

Andrew MacDonald posted video of first responders cutting through the roof of his 1993 Honda Accord to his YouTube channel on Feb. 22. The clip, which is just over 2 1/2 minutes long and bears the title “Car accident. Videoed myself,” shows a dizzy and bloodied MacDonald smiling for the camera as a local fire crew uses extraction equipment to aid in the rescue.

“I blacked out behind the wheel at [5:30 a.m.] after a night in Victoria, B.C.,” MacDonald wrote. “Drove straight into a pole on the driver’s side at 60 km/h in Duncan, B.C.”

As of 10 p.m. Tuesday, the video had been viewed more than 200,000 times.

MacDonald suffered several injuries in the Jan. 11 accident, including a broken right arm, broken left femur, two broken kneecaps, and two broken ankles, he said in his YouTube post.

He spent a month in a Victoria hospital following 14 hours of surgery, which resulted in “metal plates and screws all over,” according to his post. MacDonald could not be reached for comment.

Cpl. Darren Lagan, spokesman for the Island District RCMP, said the single-vehicle crash at the corner of Lakes Road and Tzouhalem Road did not result in charges for MacDonald.
