Three people escaped a fire that seriously damaged a Courtenay house on Tuesday.

The Courtenay Fire Department, RCMP and an investigator from an insurance company are looking into the cause of the fire, Acting Chief Kurt MacDonald said Wednesday.

A report of the fire came in about 3:40 a.m. Tuesday. The blaze occurred in the 400 block of 17th Street. The future of the house is not known yet.

“They are going to have to bring somebody in to do a structural analysis on it,” MacDonald said.

“There was heavy damage to the attic area, probably some damage to the trusses and then inside, there’s lots of smoke and water and heat damage.”
