The Parksville Fire Department and Oceanside RCMP are investigating a suspicious fire that left two people in hospital and destroyed a cabin at Parksville’s River Green Resort Thursday night.

Witnesses called 911 around 9:30 p.m. after explosions were heard and a cabin was seen engulfed in flames, said Parksville Fire Assistant Chief Steven Liedl.

When Parksville firefighters arrived, the two occupants in the cabin had already escaped the blaze and were taken to hospital with undetermined injuries, Liedl said.

Parksville Fire, with the help of firefighters from Errington, Qualicum and Coombs, tackled the fire and had it under control within 45 minutes.

Fire inspectors and RCMP officers returned to the scene Friday morning to begin an investigation.

“It does appear to be suspicious and is under investigation,” said Liedl, adding it’s still unclear what caused the explosion.

Liedl did not have a damage estimate, but the cabin was reduced to a blackened shell.
