A suspected impaired driver drove away from Oak Bay police and ended up running into the ocean after officers tried to pull him over.

Police were alerted to a suspected impaired driver in the area of Beach Drive and King George Terrace about 9 p.m. April 20. Officers found the vehicle near Haynes Park, off Beach Drive adjacent to Glenlyon Norfolk School, and attempted a traffic stop.

But the driver continued down the road and parked at Willows Beach, where police advised him that he was under arrest for impaired driving.

After yelling that he had nothing to live for and asking to be shot, the man went into the water and swam about 50 metres offshore.

He came back after speaking with officers for about 25 minutes and was taken into custody.

The man was given a driving prohibition, ticketed for driving without consideration and taken to hospital for an evaluation.
