Victoria police arrested a man after roommates discovered a stranger armed with a club on the couch of their Cook Street apartment early Monday.

Just before 1:30 a.m., officers were called to an apartment building in the 300-block of Cook after the two roommates awakened to the sounds of someone in the living room of their apartment. They went to investigate and discovered a man, armed with a makeshift club, on their couch. They retreated to a room with a lockable door and called 911.

The man was taken into custody after police arrived.

Officers identified the man and discovered he faces charges for possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose stemming from a December 2020 incident in which he allegedly threatened two strangers with a knife. He also faces pending charges for break and entering as well as charges for breaching court-ordered conditions.

Given the charges, and previous criminal convictions for serious crimes, including sexual offences and assault, the man was held in custody pending a court appearance.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call the VicPD Report Desk at 250-995-7654, extension 1. To make an anonymous report, call Greater Victoria Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
