The older stepbrother of an 18-year-old graduate of Chemainus Secondary School has been charged with first-degree murder in his death in the Ontario township of Manitouwadge.

Ontario Provincial Police responded to a report of a disturbance at a residence on Jan. 30 and found Wayne Allen with life-threatening injuries. He was pronounced dead at hospital.

Jesse Allen, 38, was arrested at the scene.

Wayne Allen worked at Mount Brenton Gold Course in Chemainus last year and is remembered by head professional Jan Best as a smart, popular young man and an accomplished golfer.

“Just a kid that’s hard not to like, really,” Best said. “He was well-liked, well-known in the neighbourhood. He worked for me in the pro shop here.”

He said Allen was originally from back east. Manitouwadge is about 330 kilometres east of Thunder Bay.

People were shocked at what happened, Best said. “We’re all puzzled by it all.”
