Price, mayor of Sidney since 2014, was elected chairman over two-term CRD chairwoman Desjardins in a secret ballot for the position, which pays $42,000 a year
Price told directors he wanted to build on CRD successes.
“We’ve got a very well run organization that serves our residents exceptionally well,” he said
Price cited parks, water and bike paths as examples of CRD successes.
“Look at CRD parks as an example. It’s an absolutely amazing gem and we’ve set aside almost 20 per cent of the CRD as park and watershed area in perpetuity for future generations. This is world-class, strong leadership. And, this to me, is the CRD.”
Price was confident the CRD can meet challenges ahead, citing transportation improvements to the West Shore, food security, housing and completing the Regional Growth Strategy updates as examples.
“I’d also like to see us work hard at getting the E&N Railway coming into play within 2018 for light rail or bus service … let’s use that valuable little corridor a bit more efficiently.”
The CRD also has a new vice-chairman in View Royal Mayor David Screech, who was acclaimed. Screech takes over from Southern Gulf Islands Electoral Area director David Howe.
Victoria Coun. Marianne Alto was re-elected chairwoman of the Capital Regional Hospital District. Saanich Coun. Susan Brice was elected vice-chairwoman.
