A man was taken into custody Sunday by Campbell River RCMP after shots were fired during an altercation.

Officers responded to an incident in the Brewster Lake Road area of Campbell River just before 6 p.m. Sunday, following reports of a brief fight between two males.

According to police, a man fired several rounds during the altercation, striking the other man’s pickup truck as he left the scene.

The man in the truck was uninjured, said Insp. Jeff Preston, and was able to to leave without further incident.

The man with the firearm also left the area.

A 44-year-old man later surrendered to police and was taken into custody without incident. Preston said he will appear in court to face a number of firearm-related charges.

“The men are known to one another and we believe this was an isolated event, and there was never a threat to the public,” Preston said. “It is very fortunate that no one was injured during this incident.”

Police are continuing to investigate.
