Safe-exchange zone set up in front of Nanaimo police station

A community exchange zone has been set up in front of the RCMP station in Nanaimo to provide a safe meeting space for people meeting strangers to buy or sell items advertised online, or parents exchanging custody of children.

A community exchange zone has been set up in front of the RCMP station in Nanaimo to provide a safe meeting space for people meeting strangers to buy or sell items advertised online, or parents exchanging custody of children.

The exchange zone at 303 Prideaux St. is under video surveillance, but there is no audio monitoring.

“We believe it offers a level of reassurance to the public and provides a relatively safe and respectful location to conduct interactions,” said Nanaimo RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien.

The zone is marked with a sign at the specially designated parking area.

The Nanaimo detachment is open to the general public from Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For police after-hour assistance, an intercom call box is located to the left of the front door.
