Comox Valley RCMP with the help of the Island District Emergency Response Team arrested a man in Courtenay before sunrise on Thursday.

A 27-year-old Saanich man has been arrested in connection with a shooting in Courtenay on Wednesday, Comox Valley RCMP say.

Mounties and officers with the Island District Emergency Response Team took a man into custody without incident at about 5:50 a.m. Thursday, said spokesman Const. Rob Gardner. The man was arrested inside a residence in the 2200 block of Coleman Road in Courtenay.

A firearm was recovered as part of this investigation, police said.

Police are still working to piece together what happened Wednesday.

RCMP received a report of a shooting at a residence in the 5700 block of Highway 19A North in Courtenay about 1:25 a.m.

The 30-year-old resident told police he encountered a man on his property and was shot after a brief interaction. B.C. Ambulance paramedics took the man to hospital. His injuries were described as non-life threatening.

A request from police for information on the shooter or any suspicious activity generated several reports of sightings of a man in the Coleman Road area.

“In one incident, a homeowner reported finding an unknown male in his unlocked detached garage,” Gardner said.

“When confronted, the male left without incident on foot.”

It was such a tip from a property owner early Thursday that led to the suspect’s arrest, Gardner said.

Anyone with additional information is asked by police to contact the Comox Valley RCMP at 250-338-1321 and cite file number 2018-3288.
