The Saanich Centennial Branch of the Greater Victoria Public Library is expected to reopen in late December after a significant flood in August at Pearkes Recreation Centre.

Cleanup work was completed last month. The reopening will include Saanich Archives and the Queen Alexandra Room.

A broken water pipe in the library’s mechanical room caused the Aug. 23 flood, which led to an estimated $500,000 in damage.

Items in the archives sustained only minimal damage and nothing was destroyed, while quick action by staff ensured that damage to the library collection was minimal.

Drop boxes for library materials will be open along the library’s exterior wall on Nov. 1, and a temporary station will be set up inside the recreation centre, where people can pick up items they have put on hold.

The closest alternative library location is the Emily Carr Branch at Uptown.
