Victoria police closed off roads near the legislature Tuesday afternoon to provide a “respectful space” for ceremonies by the Songhees and Esquimalt First Nations, who held a “canoe protocol” in the Inner Harbour and then prayers and a drum circle at the legislature.

The events were in honour of the 215 children whose remains were found at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School in Tk’emlups te Secwepemc territory.
