North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP are investigating a fire on Wednesday night that sent several residents of a multi-unit building in Duncan to hospital.

Police were called for assistance about 11 p.m. by the North Cowichan Fire Department. Fire crews and B.C. Ambulance Service paramedics were already at the Dingwall Street blaze when officers arrived.

Paramedics were helping residents, some of whom were taken to hospital for treatment.

“Investigators will continue to work on this incident to determine what caused this fire,” said Staff Sgt. Chris Swain, acting detachment commander.

“The preliminary report appears to show it was unintentionally caused, but the final fire report will take some time for a proper determination.”

A temporary shelter was set up at Cowichan Community Centre for those displaced.
