Police arrested a man at Duncan’s Christmas light-up celebration who is alleged to have walked through a group of teenagers waving a large knife.

North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP officers on foot patrol at the Nov. 29 event took a 35-year-old Mill Bay man into custody without incident.

He was released the next day. Weapons-related charges are being recommended.

Staff Sgt. Chris Swain said a witness to the arrest questioned why an officer pulled a handgun. “This officer made a split-second decision to protect others and himself, and succeeded without injury to anyone,” he said.

Sgt. Trevor Busch said members of the public might not know all of the details around an arrest. “Our officers are invested in our community, we love to attend community events, but ultimately we are there for your safety.”
