An individual who purchased a home-theatre projection unit from the back of a van on Saanich Road on Wednesday learned a life lesson: Avoid buying electronics from the back of a van.

The unit was packaged in what seemed to be original condition, but when the victim brought the equipment home, it turned out the speakers were old and defective, the projector was an old model and one box contained concrete blocks.

Saanich police said the actual sale was not criminal, but the false claims constitute criminal fraud.

There was a similar incident in March in the same parking lot in the 3900-block of Saanich Road.

No suspects have been identified in the March case.

In the Wednesday incident, the van used was traced to a Lower Mainland rental company.

Police said electronics being sold out of a vehicle should be a warning sign, along with claims that the items are extra or surplus stock.
