Lake Cowichan RCMP and the Canadian Armed Forces are warning the public after a pair of marine-location makers — also known as smoke markers — were dropped into the north side of Cowichan Lake.

The markers consist of a silver tube that burns intensely to produce light. They are designed to float and could wash up on a beach.

The devices, dropped on Aug. 6, did not activate as anticipated. One was located on Aug. 8 but the other is still unaccounted for.

“A silver canister was found floating in Cowichan Lake near Youbou,” said Lake Cowichan RCMP Detachment Commander Lita Watson. “The complainant did the right things and immediately called police as per the directions on the side of the device.”

It is not unusual for people to locate a smoke marker, but they could pose a safety risk if mishandled.
