A preliminary hearing will be held in November for the man accused of the first-degree murder of a Nanaimo teen.

Sixteen-year-old Makayla Chang disappeared in March 2017. Her body was found two months later.

Steven Michael Bacon has pleaded not guilty to the crime.

Bacon, 60, is in custody on other charges at the Central North Correctional Centre in Penetanguishene, Ont.

Criminal justice spokesman Daniel McLaughlin said five days have been set aside for the hearing, which is scheduled to being Nov. 1. A pretrial conference has been scheduled for March 3.

Bacon was arrested in Fredericton, N.B., in September 2019 after Nanaimo RCMP made a Canada-wide appeal for help locating him as a person of interest in the case.
