Jan Stelmaszyk, 35, and his three-year-old son, Matt Bartnik, are believed to be camping somewhere on Vancouver Island, perhaps in the Victoria area.

A Vancouver Island man who was reported missing with his three-year-old son has posted on social media to say he and his son are in Italy.

Jan Stelmaszyk posted a photo of his son from Arco, Italy, on Instagram today with the caption: “OMG!!! I just woke up to realize that me and my son are ‘missing.’ That ‘some family members’ are ‘concerned’ about where we are and that I haven’t posted anything on social media for a couple of days.” He added a hashtag #fakenews and #backtoposting.

Port Alberni RCMP issued a missing-persons alert Wednesday, a day after family members contacted police asking for help in finding 35-year-old Stelmaszyk and his son, Matt Bartnik. The family told police Stelmaszyk did not have cellphone communication but had been keeping family members updated through Instagram posts. The family grew worried when he didn’t post anything for four days.

Anyone with information is asked to call Port Alberni at 250-723-2424 or Alberni Valley Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
