Port Alberni RCMP are looking for witnesses and video-surveillance footage after a report that a woman accepted a ride from a stranger and was sexually assaulted.

Police were contacted March 10 and told that the incident had occurred in the days prior in the area of Third Avenue and Mar Street, and an investigation was started immediately.

Since then, police said they have become aware of social-media discussion and allegations about the incident that have generated community concerns.

“We want to assure the public that we strongly believe this incident to be targeted and [the] general public is not at risk,” said Sgt. Peter Dionne.

He said members of the public should take steps to ensure personal safety, such as sharing travel routes with friends and family and letting them know when you will arrive at your destination, carrying a phone and calling 911 if you feel threatened.

“Travel on well-lit routes, avoid shortcuts and secluded locations and walk with a friend whenever possible,” Dionne said.

Officers could be canvassing residents and businesspeople for video evidence in the upcoming days, police said.

Call Port Alberni RCMP at 250-723-2424 with any information.
