A spike in thefts from boats parked in driveways has prompted Campbell River RCMP to send an alert to residents.

Thieves are taking “whatever they can get their hands on,” said Const. Maury Tyre.

Thefts so far have been largely in southern areas of the city, including Stories Beach.

Items taken range from expensive downriggers to lifejackets, Tyre said. “Essentially, if it’s not bolted down, they’ll take it.”

People are advised to determine what’s in their boats and note serial numbers of expensive items, such as electronics.

“It’s very clear that thieves are targeting items that will be in high demand and can be resold quickly,” said Tyre, who urged boating and fishing enthusiasts to avoid “too good to be true” deals on internet buy-and-sell sites.

Police ask anyone with information on the thefts to call Campbell River RCMP at 250-286-6221.
