Victoria police and community members joined together early Thursday to save the live of a man having an opioid overdose.

Officers were flagged down about 3 a.m. in the 900-block of Pandora Avenue to tend to a man in distress, who was found lying on the sidewalk.

People in the area had already administered naloxone, but the man was still unconscious with no pulse and wasn’t breathing.

Police gave several more doses of naloxone, inserted an airway and did rescue breathing for more than 15 minutes until B.C. Ambulance Service paramedics arrived.

Police said that after regaining consciousness, the man refused further treatment from paramedics and declined to go to hospital.
