Police and firefighters joined forces Wednesday night to rescue a fawn stuck in a wrought-iron gate.

West Shore RCMP were called about 10:30 p.m. with a report that the fawn was in trouble at a residential property on Porcher Place in Colwood.

Officers arrived to find the fawn struggling frantically to free itself from the fence as its mother watched close by. They called Colwood Fire Rescue, which used hydraulic spreaders to widen the gap in the gate and free the fawn.

“Generally animal complaints of this nature would go to conservation officers, however when they are not available police will step in and address the complaint,” said Const. Nancy Saggar. “The homeowners were very understanding and gave permission to manipulate the fence as required, but [Colwood Fire Rescue] was able to restore the fence to near original state.”
