B.C. Ferries is advising customers the weekend ahead will be a busy one, so consider booking your travel in advance, avoid peak periods if possible, or travel as a walk-on passenger.

It turns out that many people vacation either the first two or second two weeks of August — making the mid-month a “changeover” weekend, causing a spike in ridership.

B.C. Ferries is offering travel tips for customers travelling Friday through Sunday:

• Sailings from Tsawwassen to Swartz Bay, Tsawwassen to Duke Point and Horseshoe Bay to Departure Bay are expected to be busy all day Friday and on Saturday morning. People without reservations could consider travelling Thursday or Saturday afternoon instead.

• Sailings from Duke Point, Departure Bay and Swartz Bay are also expected to be busy on Sunday. Travellers headed back to Metro Vancouver without a reservation might want to head back on Saturday or Monday afternoon.

• Be prepared for sailing waits if you are without a reservation and travel at peak times. Book in advance at bcferries.com.

• Leave the car at home, choose public transit or arrange a ride to the ferry terminal, and walk on. Foot-passenger tickets can be booked online on Metro Vancouver-Vancouver Island routes.
