West Shore RCMP said an estimated 40 anti-pipeline demonstrators at the detachment in Langford on Wednesday did not disrupt general police operations, but blocked an access route with three vehicles.

The group, which opposes a liquefied natural-gas pipeline in northern B.C., called for recognition of five hereditary chiefs in Wet’suwet’en territory who have not given their consent to the pipeline project.

Police said several volunteers with the RCMP’s Speedwatch Program were prevented from leaving the site in their van, while a 79-year-old volunteer had to be escorted past the protest for a scheduled meeting inside the building.

Demonstrators also went to Premier John Horgan’s Langford constituency office.

The events led to traffic issues on Veterans Memorial Parkway, Jacklin Road and Goldstream Avenue.
