Photo gallery: Showing off your face masks
A column by Jack Knox inspired an invitation to readers to share their mask fashions.
Here are just a few of the dozens of submissions we received.
1/28

Janet and Ed McDonald, Nanaimo: A very thoughtful neighbour has produced to date 300 masks and clips them, enclosed in plastic baggies, to a clothes dryer at the end of her driveway, for passers by, free of charge! We chose to leave a donation, as have others. Wearing a mask is becoming an essential "new-normal" and we are so appreciative!

Regina, Victoria: I wanted to make a mask that would be fun to wear and inspire others to do the same/ Besides that, it matches my earrings !

Kathy Mick, Victoria: Here is the mask I made. It is made from fabric I used to make my granddaughter's summer dresses. If you must wear a mask, then you should get a smile when you wear it.

Steve Ostler, Campbell River: Made it myself, so it is a custom fitting mask of awesomeness protection.

Catherine Mohoruk, Victoria: Here is my husband in his mask. I have a small home business (Catherine's Pursuits) making purses, however the need to adapt to mask making became obvious as the pandemic evolved. I am selling my masks through Side Street Studio and donating some through different organizations.

This is Dennis's mask, sewn by his wife, Sonja. Of course it depicts his favorite drink, so makes wearing the mask a little more tolerable.

Laura Scherer, Saanichton: My awesome mask, handmade by Naomi Designs.

Josephina Scherer, Saanichton: Awesome kid's mask handmade by Naomi designs.

Peg Maass Labiuk: Yes, I made this mask myself. I am an avid cyclist - former world medalist, coach, author. I also created the Victoria Covid Climbing Challenge www.vccc.fit to motivate local cyclists to ride up nine iconic local hill climbs by June 7, and to honour a family member, Andy DiStefano, who died from coronavirus in early May in Connecticut.

Ramona Perry, Lake Cowichan: I downloaded the mask pattern free of charge from McCall's patterns. The fabric I'd purchased from Fabricland in Duncan a few years ago when I was making bunting for Canada Day. I posted this picture on Facebook and got four orders, so I'm sewing for my friends at no charge. Looking forward to celebrating Canada Day in my new mask!

Gail Mackay, Victoria: Since I model with Heritage Productions, a team of women who bring vintage fashion shows to nursing homes, hospitals, care facilities and women's groups, I wondered what an Edwardian lady would wear, given the same circumstances in which we find ourselves, and, of course, the answer was probably white, and most likely lace (even the elastic on my mask is lace elastic). I sew my own masks, sometimes frivolous, sometimes serious, but always with the intent of protection.

Jonas Kvarstrom, Germany: I am a professional musician (pianist) with a masters of music from the University of Victoria and a doctor of musical arts from the University of B.C. I found this mask fabric fits my occupation just perfectly.

Estelle Ingram and Glenn Middleton, Saanich: Theasks were made by Dianne Bentley, a daughter of Estelle Ingram. The picture was attached to Glenn's door for a few weeks at Berwick Royal Oak.

Willie Waddell, Victoria: I made "camping masks" as a substitute for actual camping

Dennie Linkert: Made it myself out of a sock, no sewing involved, and wore it the first time today in Costco.

Jennifer Burgis, Victoria: Homemade doggie masks for family with friendly woofters. My mask-making continues by donation to the Metchosin Seniors Association.

Irene Manderville, Saanich: This whimsical mask I made myself. It even has a filter inside (but no good for drinking coffee!)

Sadie Bishop, Nanaimo: I am demonstrating that the only problem with the mask is that I can't drink coffee with it on! I made the mask from old dog scarf that my dog got at the groomers.

Anne Hansen, Victoria: Anne Hansen here, artist and cyclist, wearing my own homemade mask with what little bicycle fabric I have left. Have made perhaps 150 masks to hand out freely, and will have a supply of 20 or so throughout the summer for interested people with whom I cross paths (at a distance).

Jurgen Pokrandt, Victoria: The mask I'm wearing is homemade. Early on, a friend, looking for something to do, found an instructional video on You Tube, bought the materials, and then made a bunch of these cloth masks for relatives and friends.

Hiroko Currie, Sooke: This is my "Christmask." I have been making masks and have sent them to friends in the UK, and family in Ontario, Alberta and elsewhere.

Joan Avery, North Saanich: This is one of my homemade cloth masks with a butterfly appliqué cut out from an old sundress. I made the stained glass heart this month for my roadside tribute.

Ken Heal, submitted by Mike Heal: The family friend that makes these is Betty Anne Williams from Swift current, Sask.

Julie King, Victoria: "Oh Canada" purchased in Victoria from Jenn and Esther at ezspree.ca.

Kari Searle, Nanoose Bay: David Searle submitted this photo, saying: "This is my wife, Kari Searle, wearing one of several masks she has made for both us and neighbours."

Crystal, Hope: I found an online tutorial and made this from scrap lace, an old scarf and hair elastics.
